Course overview

Advance your technical skills and step up to supervisory roles with a wide range of telecommunication skills.

In today’s digital world, demand for qualified technicians with skills in emerging technologies is increasing. Skill up and qualify yourself to design and install cyber safe optical and wireless networks, IP telecommunications equipment and networks (home or small-medium enterprise installations), cabling infrastructure, systems and customer equipment. 

Course outcomes

Students who complete this course will be awarded a Certificate IV in Telecommunications Engineering Technology, and a statement of attainment issued by Comtech (RTO90933) of the units completed. Technicians with this qualification can install, test and fault find for converging voice, video and data IP networks, and provision cyber security protections on supporting networks

Cert II or III in Information and Communications Technology

A qualification at AQF level 2 or 3 in telecommunications from the ICT Information and Communications Technology Training Package or the ICT10 Integrated Telecommunciations Training Package and certified evidence of at least 700 hours of work experience.

Cert II or III UEE Electrotechnology

A qualification at AQF level 2 or 3 in electrotechnology from the UEE Electrotechnology Training Package and certified evidence of at least 700 hours of work experience within the related scope of the qualification, which may have occurred concurrent with or after the qualification was achieved.

Electrical Licence

A current unrestricted electrical licence from any Australian State or Territory electrical regulator

Traineeship or apprenticeship

This course can be part of a traineeship or apprenticeship program if concurrently employed within the ICT Industry

Open Registration

Open registration as an ACMA registered cabler with certified evidence of at least 2100 hours of work experience within the customer premises doing cabling or telecommunications carrier work

Block 3: Protect Network from Cyber Threats

ICTNWK421: Install, configure and test network security

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install, configure and test network security in an organisational environment. It applies to individuals who are involved in the installation, configuration, and testing of network security for networks of any size in job roles including network administrator, penetration tester, and security consultant.

ICTNWK546: Manage Network Security

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to implement and manage security functions throughout a network. It applies to individuals with Information and Communications Technology (ICT) expertise and lead the development of strategic reviews of security and provide technical advice, guidance and leadership in resolution of specified problems.

VU23214: Configure and secure networked end points

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to configure an operating system on a personal computer, adding security, setting user level passwords and privileges to limit and identify user access – all required to increase protection of the end point from cyber security attacks.

The unit also provides an overview of internet of things (IoT) devices, an introduction to computer networking virtualisation and base level Linux commands.

VU23216: Perform basic cyber security data analysis

This unit describes the performance outcomes, knowledge and skills required to detect and recognise discrepancies in data by performing analysis. The unit covers the collection of data on a scenario and performing basic analysis which includes the process of breaking down the scenario to a set of subtasks which are examined for their effectiveness.

The unit also examines databases as a repository for data and the vulnerabilities that exist

This unit describes the performance outcomes skills and knowledge required to investigate the fundamentals of Windows security features. It requires the ability to comprehend the basic architecture of Windows, identify security features such as log files, instrumentation and how a basic attack might occur. The unit includes tools to collect security data centrally and query it to identify potential threats.
